Sharing a Common Vision for the Future

The Parents Association (PA) of Melbourne Girls Grammar was established 95 years ago. Over this time, a very strong entity has formed with its primary role to build a thriving, inclusive community that fosters engagement, learning, and support for both parents and students.

After only four months in my new role as President of the PA, I have been humbled by this exceptional community who, despite leading very busy lives, commit so much time, energy and support to initiatives that enhance everyone’s experience at the School.

The PA comprises year level representatives, auxiliary members, committee participants, and those willing to attend and support a host of events. This year alone we have already undertaken over 27 events, generating over $63,000 of ticket sales from 2,000 tickets sold. Some of the wonderful activities that the PA have organised or been involved in this year include cocktail parties for each year level and of course the Whole School Cocktail Party.

The Junior Years is very active with ELC and Morris Hall Welcome breakfasts, Morris Hall House Athletics, Pet Chapel/Cake Stall, and ELC, Morris Hall and Middle Years Easter Egg hunts. Our Year 12s had a barefoot bowls for parents and daughters and all our auxiliaries have been enthusiastically coming together:

Sports: Swimming launch lunch, cross country launch breakfast, Richmond and Boroondara sausage sizzle.

Rowing: The most successful rowing season yet with 18 medals won at Head of Schoolgirls, four teams attending Nationals with two teams winning gold, and organising the rowing Presentation Dinner.

Arts: Music High Tea; Dark Arts, and Mamma Mia! support.

Boarding: 2023 Boarders BBQ.

When I was asked, “How are we continuing to innovate in the PA”, I found this to be quite a daunting question as such a solid foundation has been built that reaches every member of the School.

"As I think about what innovation means in the context of the PA, I believe it is about leveraging the spectacular work that has come before us from all the members – past and present – and how we continually look for ideas to address challenges and meet the evolving needs of parents, students, and the School.

"Innovation in a Parents Association can be seen in the way it encourages an environment of open-mindedness, experimentation, and learning from both successes and failures."
- Nicole Gillard, Parents Association President

The PA aims to create a supportive and inclusive community that adapts to changing needs, leverages opportunities, and continuously seeks to improve parental involvement, collaboration, and overall support for the School's mission and objectives.

In order to achieve this innovation goal, some of the areas we are focusing on include:

1. Embracing technology: We are looking to ways of utilising technology to improve communication, productivity, and engagement. One of the first initiatives is  building a new online app to manage consignments in the uniform Swap Shop, making the process more user friendly and efficient. We are also looking at financial software to improve our financial systems and payments.

2. Virtual meetings and webinars: With the rise of remote work and digital communication, we wanted to offer a hybrid form of communication to meet more people’s needs. All PA meetings are now conducted both in a live environment and through a simultaneous webinar.

3. Parent education programs: We have introduced a speakers series into our PA meetings to provide educational resources, information sharing, and support to parents. These presentations are designed to cover various topics such as child development, parenting strategies, mental health awareness, and digital literacy.

4. Inclusion and diversity initiatives: We continue to work towards fostering an inclusive and diverse environment within the School. Some plans we would like to implement include inclusivity ambassadors as well as events that promote cultural understanding, celebrate diversity, and create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all families. We would also like to be able to introduce students to activities they would otherwise not be exposed to or engaged in such as ‘come and try’ events across different sports like snowsports and cross country.

5. Parent feedback and input: We would like to collaborate with the School to create channels for parents to provide feedback, suggestions, and ideas, and incorporate their perspectives into the work we do on a more regular basis.

Our ongoing goal is to find ways to continue to improve and stay relevant with the changing times. We welcome feedback from the community on other suggested initiatives or ideas. If you have any suggestions, please contact community@mggs.vic.edu.au.
