New Year – Same Spaces; Familiar Faces

It was a welcome start to the year for our boarding students. With a full calendar of activities ahead and much warmth amongst the community, they have relished the chance to reconnect with familiar faces and meet some new ones after a year of uncertainty.

The hallways of our Boarding House are once again filled with noise and joy. Our residents have returned to their ‘home away from home’ happy and full of energy for a new year. It can be a daunting experience to be away from the family unit, but the staff at Melbourne Girls Grammar have put significant effort into creating a great environment – one filled with opportunities to make lasting memories.

Replicating the Home Environment

When considering living, and studying, away from home, most would add to their wishlist safety, comfort, security, familiarity, friendship and a diversity of activities. The Melbourne Girls Grammar Boarding House offers all that and more! With its considered approach, the team ensure each resident has an experience that extends their education and development.

Parents and families have access to myriad communication channels to keep watchful eyes across the development of their daughters as they navigate studies, extracurricular activities, and celebrate personal successes. They have access to web portals and apps to ensure that they are able to communicate and keep in touch; they learn about classroom news and campus events, and of friends and new experiences.

“We provide a realistic home environment. The girls are free to be themselves. The staff are all here for the right reason – to provide the best possible care for everyone in the House.”

Alex Baulch, Residential Boarding Supervisor

“When my daughter comes back to the boarding house she is often met by a group of her friends, hugs, welcomes and always ready to help with the bags. The comfort in the environment gives them that security. They enjoy coming back to the boarding house. The staff are welcoming and interested, it is super evident that they enjoy their job.”

Tony Giles, Boarding Parent

“I’ve never met a more polite group of girls in my life, with everyone in such a rush to grow up it’s great to meet students that are so respectful. Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious.”

Amanda Haggie, Director of Boarding

"My daughter is thriving in the Boarding House. She feels part of a big family, with all it’s chaos and closeness, and looks forward to getting back to school at the end of each holiday. I have watched her confidence grow as she is supported to be herself but also challenged to lift her game from time to time. She is inspired and motivated by the endeavours of the older girls and loves being one of the ‘older girls’ for the younger years. I am constantly impressed by the warmth and connection I see between the students and the staff in the Boarding House and I know my daughter feels completely comfortable talking with any of them."

Juliet Cook, Boarding Parent

"Students don’t have to pretend to be who they are not – everyone is real and that’s an important part of the culture as people feel comfortable.”

Amanda Haggie, Director of Boarding

After the Bell

Outside of hours, no detail is spared and the boarders have access to a diverse calendar of extracurricular activities including movie nights, giant Jenga and cooking. Regular meals are nutritionally balanced and everyone is encouraged to keep fit and healthy through innovative games like 'bubble soccer' and jogs around the picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens.

Our Boarders have had a great start to the year and have settled in beautifully. The returning residents have welcomed newcomers and familiar faces alike with open arms and assisting them to adopt respectful practices. The Boarding House is idyllically set in the cultural hub of Melbourne. Our 'home' is framed by the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens and enjoys views of the CBD. Boarders are encouraged to explore the surrounding parks and walking trails at the weekends and make the most of nearby art exhibitions and local cafes.

Our boarders are a diverse 'bunch' who celebrate their myriad differences and backgrounds open-heartedly learning much from each other.
