Strength in our Connections

2020 has been a remarkable year – bushfires, the pandemic, extended periods of remote learning, and our community living distantly in Melbourne, regionally, interstate or abroad. Many have had jobs disrupted and others have needed to reinvent their businesses to manage the change. A sense of belonging has never been so important for so many; the capacity to remain connected to others and to demonstrate empathy and lend support has never been stronger.

Against this backdrop, the Melbourne Girls Grammar community have been immensely generous. We have seen individuals, some of whom have never given before, dig deep to support the students and the School during these times. In a year such as this, it was important to focus on the people who make up our community – our students – for our Annual Giving campaign. An unprecedented number of people have donated through our online portal, breaking all giving records at the School. The money donated will go towards scholarship at MGGS. It will support those who otherwise would not have the capacity to attend Melbourne Girls Grammar because of financial disadvantage. In addition, our Indigenous Scholarship Program will also continue to operate.

Within our community some have honoured their pledges to the Artemis Centre, while others have given generously through their fees and by giving back.

Every donation is precious regardless of its size; collectively it enables the gift of education. We are immensely grateful for your trust in us as experts in the education of young women, and your support in helping us continue our legacy as a leading girls' school in Australia, and across the world. You have supported our capacity to make our learning environment a valuable third teacher and have provided spaces for calm relaxation and social interaction. Most importantly you have personally contributed to our tradition of educating capable and talented young women for the future. Thank you.

This year, we have been honoured by the generosity of former Old Grammarians who have gifted us a perpetual scholarship that reinforces the connection between past students, current students, and the students of the future. They are distinguished by their support of the School and in their gift of education to young women.

The Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler Scholarship

Barbara and Ralph have a deep connection to Melbourne Girls Grammar with their family lineage spanning across four generations. Ralph’s sister Jacqueline Clarke (Ward-Ambler, 1949), mother Cecilia Ward-Ambler (Tomlinson, 1912), Barbara’s Aunt Frances Vorrath (Bult, 1931), and granddaughters Emily Ward-Ambler (2012 School Captain) and Sarah Ward-Ambler (2017), all attended the School.

The Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler Scholarship (Years 9-12) is awarded to a commencing Year 9 student who has demonstrated academic excellence and would not otherwise be able to attend the School. This Scholarship ensures that the recipient has the resources available to fulfil the potential they have displayed and to have the opportunity to flourish educationally and personally at Melbourne Girls Grammar.

Barbara Ward-Ambler (Bult, 1956) and Ralph Ward-Ambler AM (Kinder, 1940) clearly value the education of young women. The donation is for a perpetual scholarship. The first Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler scholar will commence in Term 1 2021.

The Judy Roach Scholarship for Boarding

Judy Roach (Westacott, 1948) and her late husband Ian Roach (1925-2003) shared a vision that girls’ education is equally important as boys’ education. It is Judy’s hope that this scholarship will provide opportunities for future generations of Grammarians to develop confidence, resilience, and lifelong bonds.

“I had so many happy memories at school and lifelong friendships, I just wanted to give something back”, said Judy.

Judy was a country girl from Terang, a small town in the Victorian Western Districts. She embraced life as a boarder (1943 – 1948) and immersed herself in new opportunities, forming strong bonds and thriving in her passion for sport, physics and English. Judy also took on a leadership role as Boarding House Prefect and advocate for her fellow boarders in 1948, and fondly recalls the encouragement and support she always had.

“I threw myself into it and adored it. We formed unbreakable bonds and companionship and so even if we became homesick, we always looked out for each other. We were all such a strong group of friends, so we never felt alone”, she tells of this time.

After leaving MGGS she channelled her passions for science and sport into a lifelong career as a physiotherapist. She married Ian Roach, in 1958. Their daughter, Sally Gough (1981) along with granddaughters Jessica (2018) and Lucy (2015) have all followed in Judy’s footsteps by attending Melbourne Girls Grammar. Her youngest granddaughter, Georgie Gough, is a current boarder in Year 10. Judy’s mother in law, Lady Norma Upjohn (1913) was the first member of the four generation lineage.

Thank you

Melbourne Girls Grammar is immensely grateful for the ongoing philanthropic support provided by members of our school community. We thank you all for digging deep and helping us further the advancement of young women through the gift of education.

Campus Beautification

Many current parents donate to the School’s building fund through their annual fees across four instalments, or in dedicated one-off donations. The contributions made provide Melbourne Girls Grammar the opportunity to refurbish our learning spaces, beautify grounds and enhance the experience our girls have every day. Special projects such as the DJ Ross Memorial Window are also enabled.

The generosity of so many individuals, families, staff, and supporting groups enables us to continue to improve the educational opportunities for our young Grammarians. The 2020 year has been no exception, even under difficult circumstances. The gifts from our community have been provided in support of our current and future students who would otherwise not be able to attend MGGS.
