Giving the Gift of Opportunity Together
Having always greatly appreciated the privilege of an education at Melbourne Girls Grammar, Louise Gourlay AM (Holmes, 1955) fondly remembers the opportunities she was fortunate to receive, and those memories fuel her commitment to give back to the School.
A lifelong passion for education, sport and friendship led Louise and her sister Prue Johnson (Holmes, 1953) to support the School and encourage others to do so.
The 84-year-old is just one member of MGGS's generous donor community, who has helped provide opportunities for generations of Grammarians.
As Swimming Captains in 1953, ‘54, and ‘55, the sisters took younger girls to the Olympic Pool twice a week to prepare for Life Saving exams (now referred to as the Bronze Medallion), and on Friday afternoons, they took 70 Morris Hall girls to teach them to swim, in a bus!
To have a swimming pool at the School was always an ambition, and to make sure that future generations of students could learn the vital skill of swimming was a catalyst for the generous gift to the Artemis Building Campaign.
"My mother was an Old Grammarian, so my daughter and granddaughters are third- and fourth-generation benefactors of the Melbourne Girls Grammar privilege, and I have, from the very beginning, always contributed in a small way, so over all those years, I was surprised how it had mounted up," she said.

Louise and her late husband, John, have made significant contributions to education and health through philanthropic activities and their charitable foundation, the Gourlay Charitable Trust. She is very proud that her children and their children continue to work with and support many projects for young people and education, recognising the privileged education they have had. She, therefore, encourages her peers to support the School and to remember the pleasures and benefits they enjoyed.
"This School has gone from strength to strength," she said. "And, with excellent leadership, it is in a very strong and happy place at the moment, which makes it so important that we, who have benefited, old and young Old Grammarians, should try to make opportunities for more young people to enjoy those privileges.
"It's important that we embark on a serious program to offer scholarships because being an inner-suburban school means we can attract great talent from the wider community, which, in turn, avoids a parochial environment – this is one of the great strengths of Melbourne Girls Grammar."
Having been involved with many charities and the Royal Children's Hospital for over 40 years, Louise has seen many changes in fundraising and charitable giving. Women are now much more independent.
"In our day, we were supported by our husbands. Most women didn't work once they had children, so the whole situation has changed radically," she said. “That is why I hope the next generations of independent young women will help and support the School and its new programs because they feel a recognition of the benefits they gained from a special education at a very special place."

In 2022, Melbourne Girls Grammar’s First VIII (The Merton) made history at the famous Henley Royal Regatta, becoming the first sports team to represent MGGS on the world stage in its 130-year history. Our dedicated community gathered in support of our rowers and generosity helped the team realise their full potential.
